Your 4-foot-wide bathroom has enough length for every fixture you need and still feels tight each time you pass the toilet. These two 4x10 bathroom floor plans protect a usable path from the door to the shower, so daily routines stay comfortable. With 10 feet to divide, the choice comes down to a larger shower or more counter space.

The plans here assume a finished interior measuring 48 by 120 inches between the wall surfaces. A framed 4x10 footprint will be smaller after drywall, backer board, and tile are installed, so confirm what the dimensions represent before using them.

This shape turns up in rowhouse rear extensions, converted closet runs, basement bathrooms along foundation walls, and compact ADUs. The existing plumbing stack, masonry wall, or stair opening often sets the limits for fixture relocation.

## How the 48-inch width affects the layout

Every fixture projects into the same narrow aisle. Five inches saved at the toilet makes a noticeable difference when someone is drying off or helping a child at the sink.

Protect 24 inches for the continuous path through the room when the plan allows. Working to the 21-inch toilet minimum leaves little tolerance for tile thickness or an out-of-plumb wall.

### Measure fixture projection before you shop

Use the finished dimensions from each fixture’s specification sheet, since labels such as compact and standard cover a wide range of sizes:

| Alcove tub | 30 to 32 inches |
| Standard toilet | 27 to 30 inches |
| Short-projection toilet | 23 to 25 inches |
| Stock vanity | 21 to 22 inches |
| Shallow vanity | 16 to 18 inches |

Reducing toilet projection from 29 to 23 inches increases the clear space from 19 to 25 inches. An 18-inch vanity leaves 30 inches in front, enough to stand squarely at the sink.

### Keep the clearance zones on the drawing

Under [IRC Section R307](https://codes.iccsafe.org/s/IRC2021P2/part-iii-building-planning-and-construction/IRC2021P2-Pt03-Ch03-SecR307), a toilet needs at least 15 inches from its centerline to a side wall or adjacent fixture and 21 inches of clear space in front. The same section calls for 24 inches of clear floor in front of a shower opening.

Shower compartments have separate requirements under IRC Section P2708. The finished interior needs at least 900 square inches, with a 30-inch minimum dimension and a 22-inch clear access opening. Local amendments sometimes require more, so the final drawing needs review under the code adopted where you live.

## Two 4x10 bathroom floor plans

Compared with a [6x8 bathroom](https://www.blockrenovation.com/guides/6x8-bathroom-floor-plans-costs-to-maximize-its-usability?hsLang=en), this footprint favors a one-wall sequence with the shower across the far end. The toilet and vanity stay along one long wall, leaving a direct path from the door.

### A 60-inch-deep shower for one or two adults

Choose this version when bathing space matters more than storage, especially in a guest bathroom, ADU, or primary bath used by one or two adults. The dry zone fits the essentials as long as the toilet projects no more than 25 inches and the vanity stays around 16 to 18 inches deep. Towels and extra toiletries will need a cabinet outside the bathroom or recessed storage in the wall.

For families renovating the only bathroom in the house, this layout will get more daily use. The shower remains comfortable, and the extra foot supports a longer vanity with drawers and counter space on both sides of the sink. Plan 2 marks a 22-inch clear shower entry, so keep that finished measurement when selecting the glass enclosure and accounting for tile thickness.

### Decide based on the storage you use every morning

The 48-inch shower is the stronger all-purpose choice when towels, bath toys, hair tools, and cleaning supplies must stay in the room. Choose the 60-inch version when storage already exists nearby and the larger shower will get more use than another foot of counter.

## When a tub still belongs in the plan

A 60-inch alcove tub fits along the 10-foot wall and leaves only 16 to 18 inches between the apron and the opposite wall. That passage feels cramped once a bath mat is down or someone is helping a child climb out.

A compact soaking tub around 48 to 54 inches long and 27 to 28 inches deep returns a few inches. Check the interior bathing well too, since short tubs vary greatly inside.

Still, the only bathroom in the house deserves special consideration. For many families with young children, the tub is part of the nightly routine, and future buyers may expect at least one in the home. ## Door and glass choices for a narrow bathroom

Show the entry door and shower door open at 90 degrees on the same plan. That view catches overlapping swings before the framing and plumbing locations are final.

### Keep the entry door out of the aisle

- **An outswing door leaves the bathroom floor open.** The hallway needs a safe landing away from nearby doors and stairs.
- **A pocket door clears both sides of the opening.** The wall cavity needs enough uninterrupted space for the door and cannot contain plumbing that blocks its path. A straightforward remodel installation costs about $1,200 to $2,500.
- **A surface-mounted slider avoids opening the wall.** It needs blank wall beside the doorway for the full door slab and allows more sound and light through than a hinged door.

### Check the installed opening of the shower glass

IRC rules require a hinged shower door to open outward, placing its swing in the aisle. A fixed panel or sliding enclosure avoids that conflict.

Some sliders advertised for a 48-inch opening have a smaller walk-through after the panels overlap. Plan 2 marks the required 22 inches, so confirm that installed clearance on the enclosure specification sheet.

## Drainage and threshold details

Open shower entries depend on the floor pitch, glass length, and showerhead position. Aim the showerhead away from the opening and pitch the floor toward the drain.

Start with the shower-floor tile. Mosaics follow the multiple slopes around a point drain, and larger tile needs the single-plane pitch created by a linear drain at the back wall. In either assembly, proper pitch and waterproofing determine how well the shower drains.

Depending on the structure, curbless construction requires a recessed subfloor, modified joists, concrete work, or a raised bathroom floor. A low curb costs less when recessing the shower becomes difficult. Removing the threshold reduces a trip point. Full wheelchair access still requires more turning space than this room has.

## Storage, lighting, and ventilation that fit the room

Freestanding shelves narrow the passage and collect clutter where you already have little room to spare. Built-in and wall-mounted storage keeps the floor open.

### Use the wall depth for storage

- **Recess a medicine cabinet between the studs.** A depth of 3 to 4 inches clears daily toiletries from the counter without affecting the aisle.

Is 4 feet wide enough for a full bathroom?

 A finished interior measuring a true 48 inches has room for a shallow vanity, short-projection toilet, and shower across the far end. Local code review remains necessary before the fixture locations are finalized.

How large can a shower be in a 4x10 bathroom?

 Shower depths range from 42 to 60 inches while spanning the 48-inch room width. In these two plans, 60 inches is the practical maximum because the toilet and vanity need the remaining 5 feet.

Can a 4x10 bathroom include a tub?

 A compact soaking tub is the better fit when this is the only bathroom in the house, especially for a household with young children. A standard tub along the long wall leaves a narrow passage beside it.
