    Sixty inches of interior depth is the practical minimum for one wall of hanging storage plus room to stand in front of it. The math is straightforward: 24 inches for clothes and 36 inches for the walkway.

    A comfortable version runs 66 to 72 inches deep inside, producing a 68 to 80 inch exterior projection after accounting for the wall assembly.     A closet can fit in awkward exterior locations

    A closet has an advantage when the available projection sits over a porch roof, garage, or another area that would make a full habitable room difficult. The storage function gives the design more flexibility because the room does not need to meet every requirement that applies to occupied living space.

    The insulation and air-sealing requirements still need to be addressed, and the existing structure needs to support the new load.

    First-floor and second-floor closets are different projects

    A first-floor closet has a direct path to the ground. A second-floor closet adds weight above an existing floor system, so the structural review starts with how that load reaches the foundation.

    A closet does not carry the same residential code requirements as a habitable room. Under IRC R305.1, the 7 foot minimum ceiling-height rule applies to habitable space, hallways, bathrooms, toilet rooms, laundry rooms, and specified basement areas.     Add capacity before adding square footage

    Double-hanging is one of the first options to price. Two rods at 42 inches and 84 inches divide the same vertical volume into separate zones for shorter garments.

    Move an interior partition

    Closets are frequently placed against interior walls because exterior walls are reserved for windows and other openings. The wall behind an existing closet might face a hallway, stair landing, or another closet.

    Moving that partition 18 to 24 inches creates a deeper closet without excavation, footings, siding, or a new exterior wall. The cost still includes framing, drywall, flooring, trim, and any electrical or HVAC work affected by the move.

    Take space from the bedroom carefully
