You tend to notice grout failure while you're doing something else. Mopping, mostly, when the water sits in a joint instead of wiping away with everything else. Look closer and there's a chalky edge here, a dark line near the dishwasher there, and a spot where your fingernail comes back with a little grout on it. The tile is almost certainly fine. Grout is the part of a tile floor that's meant to go first, and the cost to regrout a tile floor is $5 to $11 per square foot installed, or about $500 to $2,200 for most rooms, against $10 to $50 per square foot to start over with new tile.

Those figures assume ceramic or porcelain in decent condition. Mosaic tile, epoxy grout, a soft spot in the subfloor, or a slow leak under the floor will each move the number, and the ranges below account for them.

## Average cost to regrout a tile floor

The average cost to regrout a tile floor is $5 to $11 per square foot with labor and materials together. Labor takes 70 to 80% of that, and almost all of the labor is removal rather than installation.

Small jobs don't follow the per-square-foot math. Most tile contractors carry a minimum service fee somewhere between $250 and $500, so a powder room costs roughly the minimum whether the crew is there for two hours or five. That's the real argument for bundling. Adding a hallway or a mudroom to the same visit spreads the trip charge across more square footage and brings your effective rate down.

## How much grout line your floor actually has

A crew prices your floor in square feet and works it in linear feet of joint. Those two numbers come apart faster than most homeowners expect. Removal is the bulk of the labor, and removal happens one foot of joint at a time, so tile size ends up governing the bill more than room size does.

Same room, same 100 square feet, and the penny round floor carries 16 times the joint length of the porcelain plank. That gap is why a mosaic bathroom comes back at $12 to $20 per square foot while a large-format entry quotes at $5. It also explains the minimum service fee. A 40 square foot hex floor holds roughly 480 linear feet of joint, which takes about a day.

Grout volume follows joint width, but labor hours follow joint length, and labor is the larger share of the bill. Measure one tile, find your row, and you can check a quote against it.

## What makes one regrout cost more than another

- **Joint width and depth decide which removal method works.** Narrow 1/16 inch joints need a thin blade and a slow hand. Wider sanded joints clear quickly with an oscillating tool, so they cost less per linear foot even though there's more grout to replace.
- **Grout type affects material and labor both.** Cement grout runs $10 to $70 per 25 pound bag. Epoxy costs three to five times more, and it sets fast enough that placing it cleanly takes practice.
- **The condition underneath decides whether regrouting is even the right job.** Tiles that click under a footstep, grout that crumbles under thumb pressure, dark patches that never fully dry: any of those means a contractor will price repair work before touching the grout.
- **Sealing shows up as its own line item.** Cement grout needs a penetrating sealer, at $0.50 to $1.50 per square foot in material plus labor to apply it. Epoxy is the one type that skips this step.
- **Access adds hours that have nothing to do with tile.** Pulling and resetting a toilet, cutting grout under a cabinet toe kick, and working around a pedestal sink all add time to the day.

## The grout decisions worth making before the crew arrives

A regrout is the only chance you get to change grout without touching the tile. Two decisions are worth thinking through in advance.

### Epoxy or cement

Epoxy grout gets recommended more often than it earns on a floor. In a shower, where the assembly takes standing water every day, the three to five times price premium buys real performance. On a kitchen or entry floor, what wears grout down is foot traffic and abrasive cleaner, and epoxy doesn't do much about either. It also complicates the next repair, since a cracked epoxy joint resists the spot-patching that cement accepts easily. Cement grout with a sealer handles most floors.

Sealer buys you time to wipe up a spill before it soaks in. It does not keep water out of the joint, and it wears out of the traffic lanes well before the one to three year reseal schedule implies. Reapply it anyway, but the bigger variable is what you clean with. Acidic cleaners and bleach etch cement grout, and etched grout stains faster than any sealer keeps up with.

### Grout color

Matching the original color is the default request and it's usually the wrong one. That color is what the floor looked like on day one, and nothing else in the room is on day one anymore. New grout in the original shade will look bright against tile with a decade of wear on it, and it will start looking dirty within a year in the traffic lanes. Going a shade or two darker than the tile's undertone hides the wear pattern and buys years before the floor looks tired again. Light grout on a floor needs more upkeep to keep looking new. ## What could go wrong if you regrout the floor yourself

Plenty of homeowners have regrouted a floor and gotten a decent result. The problem is how little you save. Materials and a grout removal tool run $60 to $200 for a 100 square foot floor, so you're clearing somewhere around $400 to $900 in return for two weekends and everything on this list:

- **Chipped tile edges are the most common casualty and they don't come back.** One slip takes a bite out of the glazed edge, and the only real fix is replacing that tile, which usually means disturbing its neighbors too.
- **Grinding cement grout puts respirable crystalline silica into the air.** This is the same dust [OSHA regulates on construction sites](https://www.osha.gov/silica-crystalline), and a shop vacuum won't catch it. Pro crews run HEPA extraction attached at the tool and contain the room, which is why a Saturday spent grinding grout can end with fine dust in every HVAC return in the house. A hardware store dust mask is not rated for particles this fine.
- **Cement grout cures to whatever color the water content gave it.** Banding from a wetter second batch won't show up until everything dries, and by then the correction is grinding it back out.
- **Removal that stops too shallow guarantees you'll do this again.** New grout needs roughly two-thirds of the joint depth to bond and hold. A thin skim over the old grout looks finished for a season, then cracks.
- **Regrouting over an active leak seals the problem in.** When grout fails because water is getting under the tile, fresh grout hides the symptom while the subfloor keeps taking on moisture. Checking for that is standard for a tile contractor and almost nobody's first instinct otherwise.
- **Grout haze has a short window.** It washes off easily during a specific stretch after placement and turns into an acid job once it cures. Miss that window across 200 square feet and you've added a full day of miserable work.
- **Movement joints are supposed to be caulked, not grouted.** The perimeter gap at the walls and any joint over a change in substrate need flexible sealant so the floor can expand. Packing rigid grout into them is a common reason a freshly finished floor develops one long straight crack a few months later.
- **The hours are worse than they look on paper.** Alone, on your knees, with a hand tool, plan on two full weekends for what a two-person crew does in one day.

None of this makes the job impossible. It's just that a tile contractor will quote the same floor a few hundred dollars over your material cost, finish it in a day, and warranty the result.

## When regrouting is the wrong fix

Regrouting solves one specific problem: grout that has broken down while the tile and the substrate are still sound. Three situations call for something else.

- **Grout that's intact but stained is a cleaning job.** Professional cleaning runs $0.50 to $3.50 per square foot, roughly a quarter the cost of regrouting. The test is whether the joint is still solid: press a fingernail into a few, and if nothing comes away, what you have is a staining problem.
- **Loose or hollow-sounding tiles need to be lifted and re-set first.** New grout won't hold a tile that's no longer bonded to the floor, and a coin tapped across the surface finds the hollow ones faster than any visual inspection.
- **A subfloor that flexes underfoot needs structural work before anything else.** A tile assembly is rigid and the grout is its weakest part, so any bounce in the floor will crack the new joints on the same schedule as the old ones.

There's also the question of whether this floor deserves the money. A house going on the market is usually better served by cleaning, which costs a quarter as much and photographs the same. A floor with dated or cracked tile should be weighed against full replacement at $10 to $50 per square foot, because you won't recover $2,000 spent on a floor you plan to tear out in three years.
