## What a single wall bathroom layout is

A single wall bathroom layout places all three fixtures (shower or tub, toilet, and sink) along one wall, with the opposite wall left open. Circulation runs parallel to the fixture row, like a galley kitchen. The plumbing wall is framed deeper than a standard partition, usually as a 2x6 wet wall, to carry the drain lines and vent stack for all three fixtures.

The layout appears most often in rooms 5 feet deep, since 5 feet fits a standard 60-inch tub or shower across the short end and leaves a workable aisle in front of the fixture row. Length is the variable, and each added foot changes what the row can hold.

## Pros of a single wall bathroom layout

- **One wet wall means the lowest plumbing cost of any full-bath layout.** Supply, drain, and vent runs for all three fixtures share the same framed cavity, so rough-in labor drops sharply. Relocating a fixture to a different wall often adds $500 to $1,500 per fixture in plumbing work, and this layout avoids that entirely.
- **Renovations stay simpler and less invasive.** Opening one wall for plumbing access beats opening three. In slab-on-grade homes, drain relocation means cutting concrete, and in many condo buildings it is prohibited outright, which is why this layout dominates apartment renovations.
- **The open wall works for you.** With no fixtures on the opposite side, you get a clear span for towel storage, shallow cabinets, or grab bars. Aging-in-place retrofits are easier here than in almost any other layout.
- **The room feels bigger than it measures.** The galley circulation keeps the floor visually continuous from door to far wall, and with no fixture jutting into the sightline, a 40-square-foot bathroom can feel closer to 50.

## Cons of a single wall bathroom layout

- **The fixture order is locked in early.** Once the wet wall is roughed in, swapping the toilet and vanity positions means re-running drains inside a finished wall, which usually costs more than the original rough-in.
- **Spacing minimums eat the wall fast.** A toilet needs 15 inches from its centerline to any fixture or wall on each side, and a sink needs roughly the same. A 60-inch tub, a 30-inch toilet zone, and a 24-inch vanity already claim 9.5 feet of wall, so an oversized vanity or a 48-inch shower may simply not fit on a shorter run.
- **Privacy zoning does not exist.** The toilet sits in view of the door in most single wall plans, and when someone is showering, the whole bathroom is occupied. Households that need simultaneous use are usually better served by a split layout.
- **Finishes and lighting carry more weight.** A long, narrow room can start to feel like a corridor if the tile runs lengthwise and a single ceiling fixture leaves the ends dim, so this layout asks more of your lighting plan and tile direction than a squarer room would.

## Single wall vs. other bathroom layouts

The right choice usually comes down to the room's shape and how many people use it at once.

### Get the fixture order right

The standard sequence puts the shower or tub at the far end, the toilet in the middle, and the sink nearest the door. The sink is the fixture you use most and the one guests use, so it earns the position with the shortest walk. An 8-foot wall like this one realistically holds a 36 to 42-inch shower, a code-clearance toilet, and a compact vanity, and at that point the row is full. Measure the wall before you shop so the vanity you order actually fits the run.

### Buy length before you buy fixtures

Every added foot of wall changes what the row can hold, and an extra foot usually improves daily life more than any single fixture upgrade would.

Length is also what earns you a bathtub. A shorter wall can't produce that uninterrupted surface.

If a floor plan decision can gain you a foot of wall, like stealing from a closet or shifting a partition, take it before you spend that money on fixtures.

### Spend the plumbing savings on the wet wall itself

Frame the plumbing wall with 2x6 studs even if 2x4 would technically work. The deeper cavity gives the plumber room for proper drain slope and venting, quiets water noise, and leaves space for recessed niches in the shower zone. ### Use the open wall deliberately

Plan the wall opposite the fixtures instead of leaving it blank. A full-width mirror there bounces light across the room. If the bathroom serves a guest room or an aging parent, rough in blocking for grab bars now, while the walls are open, even if you don't install the bars yet.

### Light the full length of the row

A single ceiling fixture in a galley bathroom leaves the vanity in shadow.
