Frequently asked questions
Block provides guidance on renovation costs and proposal structures so you know what to expect. Once you receive your proposals, we’re here to answer questions and help you make the right decision. During your project, additional costs—called change orders—may come up. You might also choose to modify your renovation, like selecting different materials or expanding the scope of work. If you ever need help reviewing a change order, just reach out—we’re happy to assist. 1. If your contractor informs you of expected increased costs, and you’re not sure about it, reach out to our support team as soon as possible. 2. We will review the change and associated scope, materials, or other things impacting the increased cost. We can help you to get clarification on any items which are not clear. 3. If necessary, we will have our subject matter experts review in detail, and can step in to discuss directly with the contractor. 4. After a full review with you and your contractor, you can move forward with more clarity. Remember that increased costs are often a reality of doing renovations, but we hope you feel more comfortable after the review.
A renovation is a big investment, and we want you to feel confident every step of the way. Block’s standard payment structure ensures clear expectations for both homeowners and contractors, with all payments processed securely through our platform. 1. Proposal Acceptance: Pay an initial amount to secure your contractor after accepting their proposal. 2. Break Ground: When your project begins, you’ll make a first installment. This helps cover key upfront costs like subcontractors, materials, and permits. 3. Progress Payment: Around the midpoint of your project, your contractor will request a progress payment to keep things moving smoothly. 4. Final Payment: Once your project is substantially complete, about 99% finished, you’ll make your final payment. Some minor items may still be addressed at this stage. By using Block’s secure payment system, you ensure a fair and clear process for everyone involved.
All contractors in the Block network provide a 1-year warranty against installation defects—so you can feel confident in the quality of their work. If an issue arises during the warranty period, you can reach out to your contractor for assistance. While, like all warranties, not every claim will be approved, most installation or product defects will be covered for 1 year. If, after discussing with your contractor, you feel that you are entitled to a warranty and are not receiving one, we are happy to review and discuss with your contractor for further investigation.
Every Block contractor offers a 1-year warranty on their work. While that warranty is with your contractor, not Block, we can help you understand your options if you have questions or concerns about a warranty claim.
We know that homeowners and Block contractors share the same goal—a smooth and successful renovation. But in rare cases, disagreements may arise. When that happens, we’re here to provide unbiased guidance and help both parties align on next steps based on our industry expertise. While we can facilitate discussions and suggest possible solutions, the final resolution is always between the homeowner and the contractor—and finding common ground often requires some level of compromise. How this process works: 1. Gather Information: You collect details about your project and the issue at hand. 2. Reach Out to Block: You send us a summary of the dispute, along with your desired outcome. 3. Receive a Response: We review your case and reply within 24 business hours, possibly requesting more details. 4. Facilitation & Guidance: Depending on the situation, we may contact your contractor, provide advice on how to approach the issue, or suggest possible resolutions for you to consider. 5. Encouraging Resolution: We support a respectful and productive dialogue between both parties to help resolve the dispute and keep the project moving forward. We’re here to help navigate challenges, but ultimately, finding a resolution is a collaborative process between you and your contractor.
Block does not act as a formal mediator. While Block provides unbiased guidance, facilitates discussions, and suggests possible solutions—the final resolution is always between the homeowner and the contractor. Block does not offer legal mediation services or enforce decisions, but instead encourages a collaborative process to help both parties find common ground.
Your general contractor will oversee your project from start to finish. They will manage the schedule, coordinate with your building, order materials, and resolve any issues that arise. While we’re always available to provide support as needed, our general contractors are fully equipped to handle all aspects of your renovation independently.
