Los Angeles - Garage Conversion

We completed a sleek and functional 950-square-foot detached one-bedroom ADU that blends modern design with practical resilience. The project began with the removal of an old in-ground pool to make room for the new structure. Once the pool was removed, we carefully graded the land to ensure a solid foundation and seamless integration with the existing lot. Located within LA’s designated methane zone, this site required special considerations. To meet the city’s safety and environmental regulations, we brought in a certified third-party contractor to install a full methane mitigation system beneath the slab. This crucial step not only ensured code compliance but also added a layer of safety and longevity to the build. Architecturally, the ADU was designed to feel open and spacious despite its compact footprint. Vaulted ceilings elevate the interior experience, creating a sense of volume and airiness that defies the unit's square footage. The interior layout features a full kitchen, a comfortable living area, and a private bedroom — all thoughtfully arranged to maximize natural light and flow. The exterior is clad in durable metal siding, giving the ADU a modern, industrial-inspired aesthetic that stands up beautifully to the Southern California climate. The clean lines and minimalist materials reflect a contemporary style, while also reducing maintenance and enhancing durability over time. This project showcases how underutilized backyard space — even one with significant initial challenges like a methane zone and an existing pool — can be transformed into a stylish, efficient, and safe living space that adds real value to the property.
