Meet Benjamin
Benjamin started Smart Choice Corp after learning the trade from his brother-in-law. We caught up with him on an ongoing project site to chat about his love of working with his hands, his path to construction, and all things Block.
How’d you get your start?
"I got started around 21 years ago. I was a mechanic before I decided to get into construction, and that really set me up for the job by giving me exposure to things like electrical work. My brother-in-law, who was the person who first got me into the trade, taught me a lot. But the thing is, he was a really practical guy— he loved working in the field, but dealing with clients, city inspectors, architects wasn’t something he really enjoyed. So I ended up studying a lot of that stuff by myself, teaching myself the business side of things. Eventually, after I had enough experience, I started my own business and brought him on board. So the tables turned a bit where he was now working for me.
What drew you to this work?
"I was born and raised in the Dominican Republic. Growing up, I would fix up motor scooters, computers, printers, work on cars, all that. I always loved working with my hands. So construction work was a sort of natural extension of that passion. I still love doing electrical and plumbing work, since that was the kind of work that initially drew me to this space."
What’s it been like working with Block?
"I was one of the first contractors you guys started working with. So I’ve really gotten to see the company grow. When I first came on board, Block was basically a 4 person team. You guys have good people on board, and so everything’s been smooth so far. The operational work Block offers is particularly helpful— construction plans, handing off clients, etcetera."
